When Mark found himself needing more care than his wife could provide at home, he began touring local assisted living communities. Now, just two years later, Mark is telling his story about finding a home at Rose Garden.
Compare Rose Garden to other assisted living communities you toured.
When first touring, I did not know if Rose Garden would be able to accommodate my needs. But when I received confirmation that they were able to provide the care I needed, I felt at peace with the move. I did not want to go anywhere else. The staff at Rose Garden just give a darn! And you can see that in the care they provide. They always have the best thoughts and intentions.
What about Rose Garden stood out to you?
My in-laws lived at Rose Garden, so I was already familiar with the community. My father-in-law would talk about how Rose Garden was “better than he thought it would be,” which coming from him was a huge compliment. I was also familiar with Sunset Senior Communities as a organization, because my wife works at Manor & Villages.
There were other communities we toured that were not able to take me, because of my complex needs. We weren’t even sure that Rose Garden would be able to take me and when I found out they would be able to, it felt like part of God’s plan for my life. I had a stroke nine years ago and was doing relatively well, but I was falling frequently. My wife was also having some health concerns, and I knew how difficult it was for her to be my primary caregiver. That is why I was so open to moving into assisted living. I trust my wife and children and knew that they would find a place for me that felt like home. And since moving to Rose Garden, I have gained even more family members! The staff especially has become an extension of my family. They know my wife by name and spend time in conversation with us. You can just tell that every staff member at Rose Garden cares deeply for us residents!
Do you participate in any of the activities, and which are your favorite?
I participate in our daily exercise group, but I enjoy outings the most! Some of my favorite outings have been Post Family Farm with a color tour last fall, Marge’s Donuts, and breakfast at Anna’s House. I’m sure you can see a theme here!
Talk about the community here at Rose Garden.
Like with anything new, I did not know what to expect when I first moved in. I bonded with my tablemates right away, because we all spoke Dutch. I’ve developed relationships with many of the staff members as well. They all have a different story, and I enjoy getting to know each one of them. It makes the conversation come more easily when I know what they like to talk about. And when I see Erica giving a tour to perspective residents, I always tell them to choose Rose Garden, because it’s the best!
What advice would you give someone considering assisted living?
Rose Garden is a great place, and I feel very comfortable and safe. The first night was tough for both me and my wife. I remember waking up and not knowing where I was. But I reminded myself that this was an adjustment and once I got used to the space and the staff, I would love it here. Rose Garden is such a good place and that has so much to do with the staff. They provide great care and always have my best interest in mind. I know I can be difficult at times, so I really appreciate the staff always caring for me with kindness, even on my bad days.
Another piece of advice I’d give is to be your own advocate and be honest with those who are taking care of you. And take everything to the Lord. After my stroke, I had many arguments with God and was angry with him, because my life looked much different than I had envisioned. But as time went on, I realized that God is always here for me and that I am so blessed. Our chaplain at Rose Garden, Chaplain Peter, has helped me see that. I love that guy…he is very caring, and we always have great conversation.
And my last piece of advice…find a place that has good food. Breakfast here at Rose Garden is always my favorite!
